She says she was only doing it to make her ex boyfriend jealous. You expect that behavior from Jared or Madoc, but not from her best friend. She knew that hanging out with Jared would hurt Tate. I feel like Tate just surrounded herself with people who did not deserve to be near her. I don’t know, maybe it is because I only got to hear from Tate’s perspective that I was not able to enjoy Jared’s character. What made me lose respect was the fact that she admitted to loving him when he did not deserve her love. I was happy that Tate did not immediately go running into Jared’s arms when he tried kissing her. He, for not one second, really deserved her. He just talked about that horrible summer with his dad, and though it was bad, it was not enough for him to be so absolutely cruel to Tate. So after he is so terrible to her and he realizes he wants her, I did not believe he groveled enough, or at all really. After that I realized that there was nothing he could do to make me love his character. That is an AWFUL thing to say, and I truly believed he hated her. But oh no, other things were just NOT okay! For instance, when he says “I could care less if you live or die” my heart stopped.

Some of the things he did I think were just his struggle to deal with his love for her. I spent last quarter at University researching gays being bullied in high school, and from that research I gained a ton of knowledge on what victims of bullying suffer, and the laws that are out there. I thought this novel would contain one of these two plot lines – the female complains the entire time about how the male character is so mean to her, when he’s not that bad and most of his “bullying” is obviously just a possessive nature, or what he does is actually awful, it climaxes, and he feels absolutely awful and tries REALLY HARD to get her back. I like these circumstances in novels but not my actual life, thank god! Anyways, it was obvious how this book would fall under that category. I usually like the plot where the male character recklessly harms the female character, and then realizes how terrible he was and spends the second half of the novel fighting to get her back. I may be a bit of a masochist when it comes to reading a story of other characters.
